Ask anyone who grew up in Rockbridge County where they swam and they’ll tell you: Panther Falls. Twenty-five minutes east on Route 60, then a short gravel run down Forest Road 315, the Pedlar River drops through a series of stone chutes into cold green pools worn smooth over centuries. It isn’t manicured. There’s no gift shop. That is precisely the point.
The walk in from the parking area takes five minutes down a steep, rooty path — wear real shoes, not sandals. The upper pool is the deep one; the lower ledges are where locals sit and let the water do the work. The river runs cold straight off the mountain, even in August, and that first shock is half the reason to come.
Come on a weekday morning if you can. Summer weekends bring a crowd and the small lot fills by ten. Bring your own water, carry your rubbish back out, and don’t jump from anything you haven’t first swum over to check. Late June through early September is the season. Afterwards, drive back over the ridge with the windows down and the river still on you — about as good as a Virginia afternoon gets.
